  6. Country Description:  Maldives is a group of islands west of Sri Lanka, off
  7. the southern tip of India.  Facilities for tourism are relatively well
  8. developed in most beach areas.

  10. Entry Requirements:  A passport is required.  Tourist visas are issued upon
  11. arrival at no charge.  Visitors must have proof of onward/return
  12. transportation and sufficient funds.  For further information the traveler
  13. can contact the Embassy of Maldives in Sri Lanka, at 25 Melbourne Avenue,
  14. Colombo 4, Sri Lanka, or the Maldives Mission to the U.N. in New York,
  15. telephone (212) 599-6195.

  17. Medical Facilities:  Medical facilities are limited and some medicine may be
  18. unavailable.  Doctors and clinics often require immediate cash payment for
  19. health services.  U.S. medical insurance is not always valid outside the
  20. United States.  Supplemental coverage which specifically covers overseas
  21. treatment has proved to be of use.  Information on health matters can be
  22. obtained from the Centers for Disease Control's international travelers
  23. hotline, telephone (404) 332-4559.

  25. Information on Crime:  There is a low rate of crime in Maldives.  However,
  26. petty crime does exist.  Valuables left on beaches are subject to thievery.
  27. The loss or theft of a U.S. passport abroad should be reported immediately
  28. to local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.  There is no U.S.
  29. Embassy in Maldives, but travelers may contact the consular agent in Male,
  30. Maldives.  Useful information on safeguarding valuables, protecting personal
  31. security, and other matters while traveling abroad is provided in the
  32. Department of State pamphlets, "A Safe Trip Abroad" and "Tips for Travelers
  33. to South Asia."  They are available from the Superintendent of Documents,
  34. U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington D.C. 20402.

  36. Drug Penalties:  Travelers are subject to the laws and legal practices of
  37. the country in which they travel.  Penalties for possession, use or
  38. trafficking in illegal drugs are strictly enforced in Maldives.  Convicted
  39. offenders can expect jail sentences and fines.

  41. Registration:  U.S. citizens who register with the consular agent in
  42. Maldives, or in the consular section of the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, Sri
  43. Lanka, can obtain updated information on travel and security within Maldives.

  45. Embassy Location:  There is no U.S. Embassy in Maldives.  The U.S.
  46. ambassador to Sri Lanka is also accredited to the Maldives.  There is a U.S.
  47. consular agent in Male, the capital city of Maldives.  The agent's address
  48. is Mandhu Edurruge, 20-05 Violet Magu, Male, Republic of Maldives.  The
  49. local telephone number is 322581 or 325199.  The consular agent works under
  50. the jurisdiction of the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka.
